As a single solo traveller in my forties and fifties, I have to say that romance and everything to do with Valentines Day was never something I engaged in. OK, at times I avoided all mention of it! However, that’s not to say I didn’t have any romantic liaisons on my adventures. I did and if that’s something you are looking for, I am here to share a little advise for you.
ut also, my life is moving on, I am about to tie the knot again in May, so I figured now is maybe the time to dust off my romantic notions and dive in to the circus that is Valentines Day.
Deep breath…here we go!
Valentine’s Day isn’t just for flowers and chocolates—it’s also a great opportunity to explore love in all its forms. Whether you’re single and hoping to make romantic connections while travelling, or in a relationship and looking to reignite the spark with your partner, travel can be the perfect setting to embrace love and adventure.
Here’s my guide to help you make the most of romance on your travels, including tips for navigating midlife dating, romantic getaway ideas, and off-the-beaten-path destinations to add a little (or a lot of) love to your next trip.

Travelling solo doesn’t mean travelling alone forever. Trust me, romantic connections can happen when you least expect them, and exploring the world often provides the perfect opportunity to meet like-minded people. So, here are my top tips for making romantic connections while travelling:

Take that cooking class, join a group tour, or sit at the communal table in a local café. Shared experiences often lead to meaningful conversations.

Be Safe and Trust Your Gut
While meeting new people can be exciting, it’s important to prioritize your safety. Always meet in public places and trust your instincts. Never do anything you wouldn’t feel comfortable to do on a date back home. Get any contact information and share it with a trusted loved one. Make it obvious what you are doing. Send a photo. If your potential date is all above board, they should not have an issue with this. And when you are back safe and sound, make sure to let your loved one know!

Boutique hostels, guesthouses, or eco-lodges often attract solo travellers who are open to meeting others. They are always my favourite choices for exactly that reason.

In my experience, sparks happen when you least expect them. If you go with a plan in mind, unless you are using a dating app, don’t expect that romance will be part of your trip. Enjoy it when it happens but don’t be disappointed when it doesn’t. You never know what is around the corner!

- South Korea: South Korea celebrates several “love days” throughout the year, including White Day (March 14th) and Pepero Day (November 11th), where couples exchange sweets and gifts.
- Slovenia: On Valentine’s Day, locals celebrate “St. Gregory’s Day,” marking the start of spring with floating lanterns on rivers.
- India: Head to Udaipur, known as the “City of Lakes,” for a royal-inspired romantic experience with palaces, boat rides, and stunning sunsets.
