Happy Easter and I hope you are having a well-earned break enjoying time with your loved ones and gorging on chocolate!
For me, this week has marked the start of my journey to the Camino de Santiago.
In case you don’t know, the Camino is an ancient network of pilgrimage routes leading to the shrine of the apostle Saint James the Great in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, northwest Spain. Pilgrims have been making this trek for centuries, seeking spiritual growth, reflection, or simply the joy of exploration.
You can choose to take the pilgrimage along any of the routes which guide you on a journey through France or Spain. For the more committed you can walk the full 1000 kilometres.
I have decided to take on the picturesque Portuguese Coastal Route and am leaving to start the adventure at the end of this month.
I will be sharing a lot about my preparation for anyone who is interested over the coming weeks, along with plenty of the usual travel news and inspiration for those who aren’t, so don’t go anywhere!
But for now, I’ve just started the training which will involve three hikes a week, along the same but progressively longer route through the Chiltern Hills in the UK. That way I can track my progress as we go. This week was just under 8kms, the final will be 20kms.
And by tracking progress, I of course mean my fitness, but in addition I am excited to see the landscape change as I watch the woods develop from winter to spring. Each day so far has felt greener and more alive and I think we are seeing the early signs of bluebells. I also walked past a field with the first lamb of the season this morning. I look forward to him finding company over the coming weeks.
