And so, it’s done! My training for the Camino de Santiago is complete. This last week, I have walked 60kms. Over the last month it’s over 150km. I have felt myself getting fitter and stronger with each step I take. I’m ready and up for the challenge.
Just to recap, the Camino is an ancient network of pilgrimage routes leading to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in northern Spain. Pilgrims have been making this trek for centuries, seeking spiritual growth, reflection, or simply the joy of exploration.
I’m not a religious person. For me, tackling the Camino is all about the opportunity to challenge myself. It’s about taking a journey on foot. It’s stepping into the unknown. It’s a chance to delve into a bit of self-reflection and hopefully set me on my next path in life.
We’ll see.
There are numerous routes of varying lengths to get to Santiago. Some choose to take the walk for several months, travelling over 1000 kms. You can take the path through France, Spain or even, I discovered Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands. (If I’m honest I am still unclear how this works but was proud to pose with the first sign I found when I was there!)
I have decided to take on the picturesque Portuguese Coastal Route. I am doing it over a week and have chosen to “only” do the last 100 kms, which, since booking I have discovered involves flying to Porto and then getting a bus for two hours to begin the walk in Vigo, Spain. So, exploring the Portuguese coast more, is an adventure for another day!
I am also not going on a tour, or even with a company who organises everything for you but sends you off on a self-guided journey.
I have an app, a booking to transfer my luggage and a bed for the night in numerous guesthouses along the way. Each day I will be walking anything from 16 to 25 kms.
If you want to do the same, then I’ll let you know all my top tips when I return.
I am also the proud owner of my Credential, the Camino Pilgrim Passport which verifies your completion of the walk. To gain my certificate (Compostela) at the end, I need to prove that I have completed the necessary 100kms. These official documents testify to my journey. I will need to collect at least two stamps a day from churches, town halls, restaurants, or hotels (as I understand it).
And I have a shell. The symbol of the scallop shell has been used to guide pilgrims along the way for centuries. I was gifted mine by a friend whose mobility challenges mean she can no longer do the walk herself. So, I’m taking her with me, spiritually via her shell.
If Spain is calling you, but walking is not your thing, how about eating? Check out the links below to see my last trip to San Sebastián, exploring the town and discovering it’s delicious pintxos.

Staying with the theme of hiking, this week over on YouTube, I share the first of my adventures in Tasmania, Australia. A hike in the Cradle Mountain National Park is a “must-do” item on any Tasmanian bucket list. In my latest video, I take you (with my sister, Al) on a walk around stunning Dove Lake. We were lucky with the weather, the views and some extra special wildlife encounters at the end. You can check it out for yourself HERE and stay tuned for many more Tasmania highlights to come.
