International Women’s Day: Celebrate, Empower and Transform Through Travel

International Women’s Day (8^th March) is more than just a date on the calendar—it’s a global celebration of the strength, resilience, and achievements of women everywhere. Where to Celebrate the Power of Women

Some destinations go above and beyond when it comes to honouring women, whether through cultural traditions, inspiring female-led initiatives, or historical significance. Here are a few must-visit spots:

Iceland

Known for its strong emphasis on gender equality, Iceland regularly tops global rankings for women’s rights. Reykjavik even hosts an empowering Women’s Day march! It is also one of the safest places to travel, where even the president (incidentally, currently a woman) is not guarded by armed security at home. Rwanda

A leader in female representation, Rwanda boasts the highest percentage of women in parliament in the world. Women-led cooperatives thrive here, from coffee farms to artisan markets. I visited when Rwanda was a very different place to sit with the mountain gorillas, which remains one of the most awe inspiring experiences of my life.

India (Rajasthan)

Experience the Pink City of Jaipur, where female-run homestays and women-only tours offer a deep dive into local culture. Visit organizations like the Gulabi Gang, a women’s empowerment movement, or donate via THIS LINK to show your support.

Discover the power of Moroccan women through co-ops producing argan oil, handmade textiles, and other artisanal goods. Cities like Marrakech and Chefchaouen offer immersive cultural experiences led by women.

Mexico (Oaxaca)

Oaxaca is home to a vibrant arts scene with many female artisans, chefs, and activists preserving indigenous traditions while advocating for women’s rights.

How to Support Women While Travelling

Transformative travel isn’t just about what you take away—it’s also about how you give back. Here are some ways to support women on your journey:

Choose Women-Owned Businesses – Book accommodation at female-run guesthouses, eat at women-owned restaurants, and shop at female-led market stalls. The female travel community Wanderful (which I have been a member of for several years) recently launched Woman-Owned, the world’s first interactive map of female-owned businesses to help you in your search at your destination.

Take a Tour with a Female Guide – Women-led walking tours, adventure excursions, and food experiences offer a unique perspective on a destination. The Solo Female Travelers Club (of which I am also a member!) prioritise tours with female guides, including an all-female Kilimanjaro climb. Buy Ethical Souvenirs – Look for fair-trade cooperatives that empower local women, whether it’s textiles, jewellery, or home goods. On my tour of Peru with G Adventures for example, we visited a local female weaving project to learn how they dye, weave and create some amazing textiles, hence the photo at the top of this email.
